When does the program start?

The 2020 Graduate Development Program will start in February 2020.

Do you have to be an Australian citizen to apply?

Successful applicants must be Australian citizens. If you are currently in the process of applying for citizenship, please contact the Graduate Program Team for further information.

Who can I contact if I have a question about the program?

Where are your offices located?

For the program our graduates are based in our Canberra office located within the Parliamentary Triangle precinct, in the suburb of Parkes, Canberra.

How are rotation placements determined?

Placements are determined taking into account your preferences, skills, academic qualifications and the operational imperatives of the Department.

Do you have to be a recent university graduate to apply?

Yes, you must have completed your qualification within the past five years to be eligible to apply.

Do I need to have a double degree, honours or postgraduate qualification to apply?

While graduates who have obtained a double degree, honours or postgraduate qualifications are encouraged to apply, this is not a requirement; a number of our current graduates hold a single degree.

Do I need a high distinction/distinction average to apply?

You will need a credit average, or higher, to ensure that you are competitive in the selection process.

Is Treasury only interested in employing economics graduates?

Treasury employs graduates from a broad range of disciplines. Our 2019 intake includes a number of law, commerce and arts graduates as well as economics graduates.

What security requirements have to be met?

All Treasury employees are required to obtain and maintain a security clearance prior to commencement.

Will Treasury help with the cost of my relocation to Canberra?

Treasury provides a relocation allowance to graduates who are required to relocate from interstate to Canberra. It is important to note that the financial assistance is not designed to meet the entire cost of relocating.

Can I undertake further study while working at Treasury?

The two‑year graduate development program provides both personal and professional development activities including an orientation week, regular formal training sessions, seminars, small group coaching, mentoring and experiential activities.

Due to the heavy schedule of the Development Program, it is advised that graduates do not take on further study during their two-year program. However; graduates are eligible to apply for Study Assistance for part-time study from 12mths.

Indigenous Affirmative Measures

Treasury is committed to the employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and is actively seeking applications for our graduate development program through an Affirmative Measures recruitment process.

What is an ‘Indigenous Affirmative Measure’?

The Indigenous Affirmative Measure process is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples. The use of an Affirmative measure is provided for by subsection 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 which enables the restriction of positions to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. While merit remains the basis for engagement and promotion, the aim of these provisions is to increase the representation of Indigenous Australians in the Treasury and the APS.

What are the requirements of applying for a position under an Affirmative Measure?

Applicants must provide confirmation of heritage prior to being offered a role. Types of evidence that are considered include:

  • a letter signed by the Chairperson of an incorporated Indigenous organisation confirming that you are recognised as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, or
  • a confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent form executed by an Indigenous organisation.

What if I don’t have a confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage document?

If you do not have the required evidence prior to applications closing, you can still submit an application. Simply attach a letter or email which outlines the steps you are taking to source your documentation. You will have to provide documented evidence prior to being offered a position. What is the Recruitability Scheme?

Applicants who identify as having  disability can opt into the scheme and if they meet the minimum requirements of the role they are advanced to a further stage in the selection process.
